Worried About a Friend?

Sometimes friends can make choices or do things that we don’t agree with. Some of these choices aren’t dangerous to their health (like dying their hair blue), but some are (like dating someone who is controlling).

If you have a friend who is engaging in behaviour that is risky, it is important that you tell a safe adult. If your friend is doing something that risks their health (taking drugs or participating in unsafe sex), their safety (meeting people in real life who they have only talked to online), their relationships (cheating on their bf/gf), or their future (sending naked pictures/videos to other people), you need to tell them how you feel. Let them know that their friendship is important to you and that you care about them, but that you are worried about what they are doing. If it’s difficult to talk to them in-person about their risky behaviour, try writing it out in an email.

If your friend ignores you and continues to engage in dangerous or inappropriate behaviour, you need to get a safe adult involved. Your friend may be mad at you for doing this, but as a true friend, you need to get involved when it is about their safety. They will not be mad at you forever. Tell a safe adult what’s going on and ask that they help you and your friend.

It sounds like you are worried about your friend. Talking to her about your concerns, like you have done, is a good idea. If she is continuing to engage in these behaviors, you may want to confide in a safe adult like a parent or teacher. Another option is to contact textED.ca through the Need Help Now link. We may be able to provide you with some additional guidance regarding your concerns.
